The Council is the
Tri-state's window on the world to an understanding of contemporary
international issues. For over 75 years, this non-profit, non-partisan,
non-governmental organization has worked to broaden the knowledge and skills of
local residents about international issues. The World Affairs Council was
founded in 1923 as an affiliate of the Foreign Policy Association (New York),
and established as an independent 501 (c) 3 organization in 1952. Its mission
was to be the primary resource agency for international affairs in Southwestern
Ohio and Northern Kentucky. In the Council's early years, the Council was one
of the few venues for Cincinnatians to gain access to national and
international leaders.
The Council brings notable experts in
international affairs and global issues to Cincinnati to meet with educators,
students, business people and the community. Our Individual Member Meetings,
Luncheons, and Annual World Affairs Conference afford members with the
opportunity to interact with distinguished guests from all over the world as
well as with local residents equally committed to better understanding global
concerns. In addition, the Council supports and strengthens education at the
high school and university levels with a series of programs and activities
specially designed to help students prepare for an increasingly interdependent
world.
In the modern information era in which the Internet and mass
communications provide easy access to a wealth of global information, the
Council continues to serve as a focal point for the collection and
dissemination of key international information.
In 1999, the Council
added to its list of services the Young
Professionals Program. This program evolved as a way to bring together
young globally minded professionals.
